Culture and Education

Image
Let's talk about Culture and Education. The two subjects are very important to me because I love my culture and learning about someone else's culture and I love Education and learning more about how education can open many doors to many people.   I am a Latina woman. Dominican-American. I was born in Providence, Rhode Island but grew up speaking Spanish at home. Everything I did was in Spanish or Dominican slang or Dominican. I ate rice and beans, platano, mangu. Listened to Merengue, Salsa and Bachata. With only one television at home, night time was for watching telenovelas. Thalia was my favorite actress at that time. Juan Luis Guerra, Los Toro Band, Las Chicas del Can was a few of my merengue favorites. Anthony Santos was the Bachata king at that time. I can go on with my list because for the first five years before attending kindergarten, I was Dominican while living in the United States. We also had the privilege to travel to the Dominican Republic to visit our gra...

Our minds create who we are

Blog when I reflect and reflect when I blog. Summer is my reflective time. It is where I sit and think, sometimes overthink. I enjoy my time, our time and every moment possible. Waking up without having a set time and routine feels good. Summer homework, class, reading. Coffee, kids running around, laundry, cleaning up, watching tv, playing outside, taking in some sun, watering the plants, getting sprinkled by the kids, sitting on the deck and again reflect. Trying to put the kids to nap, Target run, paying bills, running errands with the twins, Cook, wash dishes, more laundry, wash the floors, bath time for the kids, husband time, trying to settle down, nice warm hot shower, bed. No routine, just living life. But here I am having some type of anxiety, thinking I have two weeks left until returning back to work.(Do not get me wrong, I Love Teaching)  However, after having kids, I feel that my time with them during the summer is the best time I have with them. We ...

What can I do?

What do you do? Where do you go? What can I do? Where can I go? To hide To find peace To find a hug To give a hug To find the truth Communication is very important Trust and Respect is needed to be able to move and live in a content, calm world What do you do? Where do you go? What can I do? Where can I go? Words They hurt Sometimes more than someone can imagine Its like walking but not sure which direction to take A right, A left, straight or backwards I am stuck Stuck because I do not know where to go Which direction to take Because I am stuck Amazed Scared Afraid Because all I want is peace Peace For me and my family I want a hug I want the truth I want to know What do you do? Where do you go? What can I do? Where can I go? Should I move? I have to move. I have to move on I have to for my children, my gifts from God I have to for my family For me to find peace What do you do? Where do you go? What can I do? Where can I go? If you were in...

The sun (poem)

Image
Are you the sun? Let’s look at the light The sun The clouds Let’s feel the wind that flows That refreshes That makes us reflect Night falls We see the darkness We see the sun set, maybe to sleep, maybe to think, maybe to reflect But at night we need to see the light, we need to see the moon, we need to see the stars To able to look at the brighter side To be able to view, ourselves While we are reflecting, we are thinking, we are doing, we are moving Our thoughts in different directions Once again, the sun rises, it’s bright, it’s big, it’s huge, it takes up space, it lifts  It lifts people up The sun full of energy, so strong, so bright, so beautiful The sun is the most important source of energy for life. It gives us life, our plants life, our environment life, living and non-living things life It is magnetic It is forceful It is hot and dense The sun rays dances into our eyes The sun is a motivation of how we can create life...

Education these days...

Speaking two or more languages is very important in this world but not only speaking it but writing and reading it as well. Almost half of the world speaks Spanish, if we observe the map of the world, you will notice that Central America, South America besides Brazil, the Caribbean and Spain speaks mostly Spanish with different dialects. When I traveled to Italy in 2005, I noticed that most residents in Italy spoke more than one language; Italian and English, Italian and Spanish, Italian and French, etc. In Europe for the most part, many residents speak more than one language, they look at it as a benefit, as a resource, as a passport to the world. In a world of many different languages and dialects, why is it that United States don't look at it as a privilege and benefit? Why do some people view Bilingual or multilingual as a disadvantage? I believe that being Multilingual is an advantage, a passport to the world, more opportunities and more understanding of other peoples culture...

New Year's reflection

It has been a while since my last blog. I have been super busy with work and the family that I feel I can not sit home and start to use my computer because there is not enough time in the day to enjoy some quiet quality time with self. So here I am, done with work, done with preparing lessons and taking a few minutes to update my Mommy blog. Us, parents need to understand that the time for self is important for you. Important because it is the only time that you can sit and reflect on what is working and what could be better.  How could we become better parents, friends, sisters, daughters, colleagues, and a better person if we do not take that time to self evaluate and reflect on life. I do have to say that life is good right now, family is healthy, friends are good, work is great, husband is fabulous, and life keeps on moving on. I realized that the people that smile the most bring a smile to people's faces. I realized that positive equals positive while negative equals n...

Summer memories. #sun #twins #fun

Summer vacation has been great. At home with the twins, at times will take them out to the pool, beach, park, visit my parents or a quick run to the store or doctors appointments. The best thing is being home with them ,taking them outside to run around. Every morning after breakfast while our house is a mess, we go and water the plants, yes they have become gardeners. They water the small vegetable plants and our flower plants. They have grown up to be busy individuals, there is never a dull moment with them. Always exploring the outdoors, sometimes they listen and sometimes they don't. Always putting things where they don't belong. I guess being a child is about discovering and having fun, being creative and open. Being a mother or a parent is learning how to have more  patience then before, learning how to love more, protect them, care for them and just learn how to let go of things that really don't matter because your children are your number one pri...
